Former head of the ISI, Lieutenant General Hamid Gul (Retd) has urged the religious and like-minded political parties to form a grand alliance on the pattern of the erstwhile IJI to take the nation out of growing US influence and unrest. Speaking at an All-Party Conference on Karachi unrest, he warned the nation of US plans to destabilize Pakistan. The conference was organised by Difa-e-Pakistan Council at Jamaat-i-Islami's Idara-e-Noor-e-Haq here on Thursday.

"In the last two years no incident of violence at the Nato cargo supply terminals in a city where every of its part affected by killings has taken place," he added. Recalling the 'CIA-agenda' of 1982, he said, the US spy agency had then set Karachi as its primary seaport to have an easy access to the Central Asian states. He said the CIA had concluded finally that neither Turkey nor Iran could be the feasible harbours for its supplies. Its analysis, however, confirmed Karachi the final base for its convenient land routes to the Central Asian countries. He said the US plan of 1982 was clearly aimed at controlling Pakistan and running its internal and external affairs. "The US wants to run the country as per its intentions," he added.

He said the worsening lawlessness required the federal and provincial governments to resign. He said the presence of militant wings in three political parties proved the government's weak influence in the city. "A IJI is needed today," he urged right-wing political parties. Offering solution to Karachi unrest, he said, the government should set up "Shariah Courts" to award harsh sentences to criminals involved in targeted killings, extortionism, and kidnapping for ransom. He said if the Anglo-Saxon legal system was still unable to bring criminals to justice then Shariah Courts were the only solution to restore peace in the city.

"In radical situations, radical decisions are taken to overcome problems," he suggested, saying Rangers should be given powers. He also criticised head of Awami Muslim League, Shaikh Rashid for leaving the conference early. He said if Shaikh Rashid was not interested in the conference then he should stay away from such gatherings in future.
